BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON VERNON W. MATTSON

For 35 years, Vernon W. Mattson was with the Department of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (CES) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served eight years in Idaho, five years in Florida and 22 years in Utah. In 1995 he retired from Church Education.

He and his wife Georgia recently returned from a two years CES Mission to New Zealand.

Brother Mattson graduated from the Brigham Young University in 1960 and in 1969 received his Masters Degree in Religious Education.

He fulfilled his military obligation serving on Active Duty with the United States Navy and was for many years a member of the Naval Reserve.

Brother Mattson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1934 and spent his early years just south of Salt Lake in Murray, Utah. He married Georgia Marie Jensen from Providence, Utah. They are the parents of six children, four boys and two girls, and have five beautiful grandchildren.

Brother Mattson served his mission in Virginia and North Carolina and has served in many positions in the Wards and Stakes of the Church.

In 1964, he started the Scripture Chase Programme used throughout the Church and is the author of the book The Dead Sea Scrolls and Other Important Discoveries and co-author of the missionary book, Is There An Answer. He recently finished a book on the first 40 pages of the Book of Mormon and a compilation of material on the Dead Sea Scrolls, called A Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Brother and Sister Mattson visited the Middle East on a Bible Study Tour in 1975 and have since made an intense study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other discoveries pertaining to ancient buried records. In 1977, Brother Mattson began lecturing on these discoveries and has since lectured extensively through the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

Elder and Sister Mattson are presently serving in the Leeds England Mission.
